Antidepressant Therapy

Fillmore and his collaborators have investigated the long-term cognitive implications of antidepressant therapy in patients with midlife major depressive disorder. Using a nationwide retrospective study of US veterans, he found that antidepressant exposure was not associated with an increased or decreased risk of developing Alzheimer's disease and related dementias. These findings suggest that pharmacological treatment for depression does not significantly alter the long-term risk of dementia in this population.
