Cross Protection
Fillmore and his colleagues investigated the role of cross-protection conferred by seasonal human coronaviruses against SARS-CoV-2. Utilizing a Veterans Affairs cohort, he demonstrated that recent infections with HCoV-229E and HCoV-OC43 are associated with a significantly lower risk of subsequent SARS-CoV-2 infection. These findings suggest that prior exposure to common coronavirus strains may provide a degree of immunological protection against the virus that causes COVID-19.
