Human Coronaviruses

Fillmore and his collaborators have investigated the potential for cross-protection between seasonal human coronaviruses and SARS-CoV-2. His research demonstrates that recent infections with common strains, specifically HCoV-229E and HCoV-OC43, are associated with a significantly lower incidence of subsequent SARS-CoV-2 infection. These findings suggest that prior exposure to endemic coronaviruses may provide a degree of immunological protection against the virus that causes COVID-19.
