Major Depressive Disorder

Fillmore and his colleagues have investigated the long-term cognitive implications of treating major depressive disorder in midlife. Utilizing a nationwide retrospective study of US veterans, he found that antidepressant exposure was not associated with an increased or decreased risk of developing Alzheimer's disease and related dementias. These results suggest that pharmacological treatment of depression does not significantly alter the longitudinal risk for dementia in this population.
