Viral Co-infection
Fillmore and his collaborators investigated the clinical impact of simultaneous respiratory viral infections within a large national healthcare system. Their findings indicate that while viral co-infection is rare, patients with multiple concurrent infections experience rates of death and severe oxygen deficiency comparable to those infected with SARS-CoV-2 alone. This work suggests that the presence of multiple respiratory viruses does not significantly increase the risk of severe outcomes beyond the baseline risk associated with high-severity individual pathogens.
